How to Apply for a Sweden Student Visa (Residence Permit for Studies)

Step-by-Step Application Process

1. University Admission & Tuition: You must be admitted to full-time studies at a Swedish university. If you are required to pay tuition fees, you must pay the first installment before you can apply for the permit.
2. Apply Online: The fastest and easiest way to apply is online through the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) website.
3. Pay the Fee: Pay the application fee (approx. 1,500 SEK) online using a credit/debit card.
4. Biometrics & Interview: Depending on your citizenship, you may need to visit a Swedish embassy or consulate in your home country to have your photograph and fingerprints taken, and possibly attend an interview. You must do this before a decision is made.
5. Decision & UT Card: The Migration Agency processes the application. Once approved, you will receive a Residence Permit Card (UT Card).
6. Travel: You must collect your UT Card from the embassy before traveling to Sweden.

Required Documents Checklist

Sponsorship Guidelines

• Sweden does not accept traditional sponsorship documents (like an affidavit from a parent).
• If someone else is funding your studies, they must transfer the entire required amount (e.g., 127,872 SEK for a year) into a bank account in your name.
• The bank statement you submit must show your name as the account holder.

Accompanying Family Members

• Family Reunification: Your spouse/partner and unmarried children under 18 can apply for residence permits to join you in Sweden. They can apply simultaneously with your application.
• Financial Burden: You must prove additional funds for dependents. The current requirement is 4,402 SEK per month for a spouse and 2,633 SEK per month per child.

Working While Studying
