How to Apply for a Russia Student Visa (Ordinary Student Visa)

1. Secure Admission and Invitation

First, apply to a Russian university and get accepted. Your host university will then submit a request to the Main Directorate for Migration Affairs (GUVM) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to issue an official Invitation Letter. You must wait to receive this original document before applying.

2. Prepare Documents

Gather all required documents, including your passport (valid for 18 months), photographs, HIV/AIDS test certificate, and legalized academic certificates if required by your specific embassy.

3. Complete the Online Application

Fill out the electronic visa application form at visa.kdmid.ru. Print and sign the completed form.

4. Submit Your Application

Book an appointment and visit the Russian Embassy, Consulate, or authorized Visa Application Center in your home country. Submit your documents and pay the consular fee. Some missions may require an interview.

5. Arrival and Registration

Upon arriving in Russia, you must complete migration registration within 7 working days. The initial visa is valid for 90 days; your university will help you extend it for the duration of your studies.

• Official Invitation Letter: Original issued by GUVM.
• Valid Passport: Must be valid for at least 18 months from the start of your study period.
• Visa Application Form: Printed and signed from the official portal.

While a blocked account is not required, some embassies may ask for proof of financial means, such as bank statements showing sufficient funds to cover your tuition and living expenses for at least the first year of study.

If you are being sponsored (e.g., by parents or an organization), you must provide a formal sponsorship letter along with the sponsor's proof of income and bank statements.

International students generally cannot bring dependents (spouses/children) on a student visa. Dependents must apply for their own appropriate visas (e.g., private visa or tourist visa) and meet the requirements independently.
