How to Apply for a Finland Student Visa (Residence Permit for Studies)

Step-by-Step Application Process

1. University Acceptance: You must be accepted as a student at an educational institution in Finland.
2. Apply Online: Submit your residence permit application via the Enter Finland portal (this is the fastest and highly recommended method).
3. Pay the Fee: Pay the processing fee online through Enter Finland.
4. Identity Verification: Within 30 days of submitting your online application, you must visit a Finnish mission (embassy or consulate) or a VFS Global application centre to prove your identity, provide fingerprints, and present original copies of your appendices. Your application will not be processed until this step is completed.
5. Follow Your Application: You can track the status of your application in your Enter Finland account. If Migri (Finnish Immigration Service) needs more information, they will contact you through the portal.
6. Wait for the Card: Once your application is approved, your residence permit card will be delivered to the embassy or VFS Global centre for you to collect before traveling to Finland.

  • A bank statement from a bank account in your own name. The funds must be freely available to you.

• Not Accepted: Sponsorship agreements from relatives, friends, or employers are generally not accepted in place of having the funds in your own account. The money must already be transferred to your personal account.

Sponsorship Guidelines

• Finland is very strict about funds being in the applicant's name.
• A letter of sponsorship from parents or a third party is not sufficient on its own. The sponsor must transfer the required €9,600 directly into your personal bank account before you request the bank statement.

Accompanying Family Members

• Family Reunification: You may bring your spouse and unmarried children under 18 years of age. They must apply for residence permits based on family ties.
• Financial Burden: You must prove you have "secure means of support" for both yourself and your family. The income requirement increases for each additional family member (e.g., adding a spouse requires a significant increase in the monthly income/savings you must prove).

Working While Studying

• Work Limits: You are allowed to work in paid employment in any field for an average of 30 hours per week during the academic term.
• During Breaks: You can work full-time without hour restrictions during holidays and when the educational institution offers no instruction.
• Post-Study Work: Upon graduation, you can apply for an extended residence permit to look for work or start a business, which is valid for up to two years.
